EPA ADDS STAR-KIST CARIBE INC. TO ITS "LIST OF VIOLATING
FACILITIES"
Star-Kist Caribe, Inc., in Puerto Rico has been
placed on the Environmental Protection Agency list of
violating facilities which prohibits the corporation
from Federal contract renewal and renders it ineligible
to receive future Federal contracts, grants or loans.
The company was found in violation of the federal water
pollution standards by discharging tuna processing wastes
into the Mayaguez Bay in Puerto Rico.
A company /may be placed on the list if it is found to
be in violation of a water pollution discharge permit or
applicable air pollution regulation. Companies may appeal
this finding in a "Listing Proceeding." After hearing
evidence presented, EPA makes a final determination on the
listing.
Star-Kist participated in a listing proceeding with EPA
in October. EPA found the Company to be in violation of its
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Permit.
Star-Kist Caribe is the second corporation to be listed
by the Agency. The Del Monte Corporation in Puerto Rico,
charged with violating the water law, was placed on the list
in October of this year.
Notice appeared in the Federal Register on October 28.
