EPA INVOKES LIST TO WITHHOLD FEDERAL FUNDS FROM DEL MONTE
de PUERTO RICO
The Environmental Protection Agency has placed Del Monte
de Puerto Rico, Inc. on a list requiring Federal agencies to
withhold Federal contracts, grants and loans from industries.
The list applies to industries found in violation of air or
water pollution standards.
The Del Monte de Puerto Rico facility, which discharges
2,600,000 gallons per day of tuna processing wastes into the
Mayaguez Bay in Puerto Rico, was found in violation of water
pollution standards.
It is the first facility to be placed on the list. The
prohibition applies only to the Del Monte Mayaguez plant.
Del Monte de Puerto Rico is a subsidiary of the Del Monte
Food, Inc., San Francisco.
Del Monte participated in a Listing Proceeding to respond
to EPA charges of non-compliance with a National Pollutant
Discharge Elimination System Permit.
Rebecca W. Hanmer, Director, Office of Federal Activities,
determined that Del Monte was in violation of the clean water
standards after hearing evidence provided by Del Monte and
EPA at the proceeding.
