United States Press Office (A-107) Environmental Protection Washington DC 20460 Agency &EPA Environmental News FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE English (703) 557-2710 GARBAGE TRUCK The wording of* the U.S. Environmental Protection NOISE REGULATIONS AMENDED Agency's garbage truck noise regulation has been re- vised.. Three technical amendments clarify or correct portions of the. 1979 regulation, as follows: (1) The regulation called (in Section 205.205. 11) for manufacturers to place a label on each vehicle stating that it is warranted not to exceed the EPA noise standard. The amendment removes any reference to warranties. The amended regulation,in-' stead, wi 11 require a label saying that the vehicle is subject to the federal noise: emission regulation. (2) The regulation (in Section 205.204(b)) prescribed the grading for drainage of the paved test site to be used in: testing garbage truck noise.. Some companies found the wording ambiguous. They mis- interpreted the language to mean that the site could not deviate from the horizontal by more than the tolerance stated in the regulation. The agency's intent was, and is, that the test site may not deviate from a true plane by more than the tolerance. The key sentence in the new wording reads: "The test site reflecting plane may be graded with a constant slope to permit drainage." (3) The regulation in Section 205.204 (c), Test Procedures, due to a typographical error, failed to state fully the type of sound level meter required for testing. The amendments revise the regulation to state that a Type 1 sound level meter is required. The amendments were published in the Federal Register on October 3, 1980. ------- |
