PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED BY PRESIDENT BUSH Luke C. Hester (202) 260-1383 EPA Administrator William K. Reilly today announced that he will create the U.S. Environmental Training Institute (USETI) to help fulfill the promise of the U.S.-Asia Environmental Partnership announced by President Bush in Singapore last Saturday. The U.S..-Asia Partnership is intended to bring together the business communities, government agencies and non-governmental organizations in both the United States and Asia to address collaboratively environmental problems that constrain growth and to improve the environment in the Asia-Pacific region. The Institute is part of a broad Environmental Fellowship and Training Program announced by the President. The USETI will facilitate the transfer overseas of American environmental expertise, expanding eventually to Latin America and Eastern Europe. It will promote government and private sector technology transfer, environmental training for key foreign decision makers, access to experts in the U.S. public and private sectors and opportunities for U.S. companies to showcase pollution control technology. Administrator Reilly said, "The •' Environmental Training Institute offers an excellent opportunity to showcase American solutions to environmental problems and U.S. competitiveness in the burgeoning foreign market for environmental goods and services, and to advance the dual goals of a healthy environment and continued economic growth worldwide." The Institute will be operated as an independent joint venture corporation with the private sector. The Board of Directors of USETI will, be made up of representatives of business, communities and non-government organizations. Government officials will serve on a Board of Advisors.
