The U. S. Environments 1 Protection Agency announced that Ford
I
Motor Co. today began sailing recall;notices to owners of about
I
306,000 1987 Ford vehicles that exceed the federal carbon monoxide
emission standard.
The affected vehicles are the 1987 Ford Taurus and Taurus^
Wagon and Mercury Sable and Sable Wagon with 3-liter, fuel-
injected engines. California vehicles are not included in the
recall.
The emission problem was found during EPA testing and Ford
agreed to recall and repair the vehicles. The auto maker will
replace the catalytic converter assembly at no charge to the
owners.
Carbon monoxide restricts blood flow to the body resulting in
less oxygen available to muscles and 'organs. People with heart
disease are especially affected by elevated levels.
Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealers wi!ll repair the vehicles. The
repair will take about one hour.
