Industry Sector Notebooks
Learn about the major pollution issues associated with specific industry
sectors through the Sector Notebooks.
What are the Sector Notebooks?
The Sector Notebook series is a unique set of profiles containing a wealth of
sector-specific environmental information. Unlike many resource materials,
which are organized by air, water, and land pollutants, the Notebooks provide a
holistic, "whole facility," approach by integrating manufacturing process, applica-
ble regulations, and other relevant environmental information. Each Notebook
includes:
• Overview of the industry, including size, geographic distribution, organiza-
tional structure, products, economic trends, financial status.
• Description of manufacturing processes, including inputs of raw materials
and pollution outputs.
• Summary of chemical releases to the environment.
• Summary of applicable federal statutes and regulations.
• Compliance and enforcement history.
• Review of major legal actions.
• Pollution prevention opportunities.
• Government and industry initiatives for compliance assurance.
• Resource materials and contacts.
Why did EPA Develop the Notebooks?
The Sector Notebook Project was developed to provide staff and managers with
a consolidated source of compliance-related information for specific industry sec-
tors. The Sector Notebook series is a highly regarded resource for a wide range
of users, including government agencies, facility managers, researchers, educa-
tors, and environmental professionals. Each Notebook helps readers:
• Design comprehensive, common sense environmental protection measures
for specific industries.
• Build a foundation for developing holistic solutions to environmental
problems.
• Perform research on an industry and its environmental regulations.
• Understand compliance issues.
• Develop industry-specific training sessions and programs.
• Determine probable cause for a lawsuit, citation, or penalty.
• Create and improve innovative pollution prevention programs.
