ReGenesis Community Health Center

Through a Green Buildings on Brownfields Pilot, EPA provided expert sustainable design services to
Spartanurg County forthe ReGenesis Community Health Center. With the support providedthrough this pilot,
the County and ReGenesis were able to retain the services of an architecture and engineering (A&E) firm with
staff trained by the U.S. Green Building Council. The A&E firm worked with the staff of Regenesis and other
local stakeholders to develop a vision forthe site that incorporates sustainable design principles while also
creating ahealthy indoor environment forthe future patrons of the Health Center. With this vision, a conceptual
design and site plan were developed that incorporate a number of sustainable design principles, including:

  • Orientation of the building to take advantage of solar energy for heating and daylighting, while also making
    the maximum use of natural
    ventilation and passive
    cooling;
  •  Reducing water consumption
    with ENERGY STAR®
    fixtures and equipment, and
    the use of captured rain or
    recycled site water for
    irrigation and other "gray
    water"  uses;
  • The use of renewable, non-
    toxic building materials;
  •  Maximizing the preservation
    and restoration of open space;
  •  Using shading techniques to
    assist passive cooling and
    ventilation ofbuildings,
    including paved areas; and
  •  Establishing atransportation
    plan to support alternatives to A proposed conceptual design for the ReGenesis Community Health Center.
    fossil-fueled, single-occupant
    vehicles by promoting
    carpooling and bicycling.

The ReGenesis Community Health Center will be part of a broader revitalization effort in a predominantly
African American community near several formerly industrial land uses, including the Arkwright Dump
Superfund site. Through the use of green building design principles atthis site, the community can move beyond
the contamination that resulted from past industrial practices to amore healthy and environmentally sustainable
future.
