Quick Reference Fact Sheet
EPA's Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative is designed to empower States, communities, and other
stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together in a timely manner to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and
sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield is a site, or portion thereof, that has actual or perceived contamination and
an active potential for redevelopment or reuse. Since 1995, EPA has funded more than 200 Brownfields Assessment
Demonstration Pilots, at up to $200,000 each, to support creative two-year explorations and demonstrations of
brownfields solutions. The Pilots are intended to provide EPA, States, Tribes, municipalities, and communities with
useful information and strategies as they continue to seek new methods to promote a unified approach to site
assessment, environmental cleanup, and redevelopment.
BACKGROUND
EPA has selected the City of Hamilton for a
Brownfields Pilot. Years of heavy industrial activity
have created several potentially contaminated
properties and zones. The target area of the Pilot is
the State-de signaled City of Hamilton Enterprise
Zone (EZ). The Hamilton EZ has the largest
concentration ofminorities, poverty, and unemployment
in the surrounding City and County. In addition, at
least 12 potential brownfields sites are located in the
EZ.
OBJECTIVES
The main objective ofthe Pilotisto identify, inventory,
and assess potentially contaminated sites within the
project area. An area-wide assessment will be
followed by site-specific Phase I assessments for an
estimated ten properties and Phase II assessments
for an estimated four properties. The Pilot, in
conjunction with the Hamilton Community
Improvement Corporation, will create cleanup and
redevelopment plans for approximately six of these
properties. In addition, the Pilot will conduct community
involvement and outreach activities throughout the
term ofthe project.
