EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, commu-
nities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. Abrownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA
provides financial assistance to eligible applicants
through assistance agreements to provide training,
research, and technical assistance to facilitate
brownfields revitalization.

Organization Description

The National Association of Local Government
Environmental Professionals (NALGEP) is a nonprofit
association representing local government officials
who are responsible  for ensuring environmental
compliance and implementing environmental pro-
grams. NALGEP's membership includes more man
165 local government environmental professionals
located throughout the United States, and was created
to assist those at the  local government level who are
responsible for dealing with environmental concerns.
The Brownfield Communities Network (BCN) is
managed by NALGEP. The BCN is a national net-

                 Project Description:

                 NALGEP's Brownfield Communities Network (BCN)
                 conducts quarterly conference calls and web casts to
                 update attendees on brownfield-related issues ranging
                 from legislative and budget issues to fostering dia-
                 logue between developers and BCN members.
                 NALGEP plans, organizes, and delivers regional
                 workshops across the country for local government
                 professionals, private developers, state officials, and
                 consultants to learn and discuss how brownfield
                 redevelopment can play a role in community revital-
                 ization and economic development. NALGEP distrib-
                 utes outreach materials to ensure that NALGEP and
                 BCN members receive updated information concern-
                 ing brownfields cleanup and redevelopment.
                 NALGEP's 2007 BCN Summit is scheduled on
                 September 25-26, 2007, in Washington, DC.

contaminated property can be an effective tool for
community revitalization. The BCN works to harness
the knowledge, expertise, and experience of leading
communities and export it to its peers.
