I 55 o SSK C3 Brownfields Training, Research, and Technical Assistance Grant Fact Sheet University of Louisville Center for Environmental Policy and Management EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, commu- nities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. Abrownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through assistance agreements to provide training, research, and technical assistance to facilitate brownfields revitalization. Organization Description The University of Louisville Center for Environmental Policy and Management (CEPM) seeks to improve the economic efficiency and environmental efficacy outcomes of governmental and business environmental management practices. It specializes in economic development and environmental protection, including contaminated land redevelopment and smart growth planning. In October 2005, CEPM, in partnership with Louisville Metro Government's Economic Development Department and the non-profit Center for Neighborhoods, developed the "Brownfields Institute," a series of workshops providing a forum for Building Community Knowledge, Participation, and Investment in Brownfields Redevelopment in Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Communities Grantee: University of Louisville Center for Environmental Policy and Management Project Focus: Training and Technical Assistance Grant for Commu- nity Involvement in Disadvantaged Communities Project Period: October 2005 to September 2008 Project Description: CEPM convened workshops to engage local stake- holders in brownfields cleanup and redevelopment planning for the Park Hill Corridor. CEPM supports community participation in the Park Hill Master Planning process so that stakeholders can have input on how brownfields development in the corridor plan corresponds with an area-wide approach to revitaliz- ing brownfields. This helps the stakeholders remain connected to the process by assisting them in com- municating with city officials and planning consult- ants, providing them with technical information and education regarding the revitalization process, and supporting stakeholder-driven projects by building a lasting commitment from stakeholders. building community knowledge about brownfields cleanup, especially in the Park Hill Corridor of Western Louisville, Kentucky.
