I 55 o SSK C3 Brownfields Training, Research, and Technical Assistance Grant Fact Sheet Hazardous Materials Training and Research Institute EPA Brownfields Program EPA/s Brownfields Program empowers states, commu- nities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through assistance agreements to provide training, research, and technical assistance to facilitate brownfields revitalization. Organization Description The Hazardous Materials Training Research Institute (HMTRI) was established in 1987 by two Iowa community colleges that have long been active in environmental health and safety education and train- ing. HMTRI promotes worker protection and the maintenance of a clean and safe environment through education and training. HMTRI offers and promotes educational opportunities, partnerships, and training programs related to brownfields cleanup and redevel- opment. Brownfields Training and Job Development Program Grantee: Hazardous Materials Training and Research Institute Project Focus: Technical Assistance for Brownfields Job Training Project Period: October 2003 to September 2008 Project Description: HMTRI builds successful job training partnerships to protect the environment, stimulate the marketplace, provide local employment, and promote sustainable reuse. HMTRI conducts workshops throughout the United States, focusing on the development of envi- ronmental and job training projects. Under the grant, HMTRI conducts an annual job training workshop. HMTRI also provides brownfields job training materials, which are included in the "Brownfields Toolbox: A Guide to Developing Successful and Sustainable Job Training Programs," available at http:/ /brownfields-toolbox.org/.
