communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be

funds eligible applicants through assistance agreements to
provide training, research, and technical assistance to
facilitate brownfields revitalization.
Organization Description
The Institute for Environmental Science and Policy
(IESP) at the University of Illinois at Chicago advances
cooperative research, scholarship, and service that
support a sustainable environment. IESP facilitates
interdisciplinary collaboration by teaming scholars with
their counterparts in the public and private sectors to
devise workable solutions for complex environmental
challenges. This university-wide environmental institute
promotes collaboration across colleges and departments,
catalyzes the formation of interdisciplinary research
groups on campus, and investigates various
environmental areas, including human and natural system
interactions, urban sustainability, and environmental
manufacturing.
Project Description
IESP will identify best management practices for
sustainable redevelopment of brownfields, and analyze
the environmental, public health, and economic benefits
of sustainable brownfields redevelopment compared to
conventional brownfields redevelopment. It also will
identify policies and incentives that can promote
sustainable brownfields redevelopment. Life-cycle
analyses of the components of sustainable redevelopment
will include materials and energy flow, ecological
