EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical
assistance to support communities in achieving greener,
more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment
at their brownfields projects. These pilots will also serve
as models for other communities across the country.

Project Description

EPA has selected the Anvil Mountain Neighborhood
property in San Juan County, Colorado as a Brownfields
Sustainability Pilot. The 12 acre Anvil Mountain
Neighborhood property is at the northwestern gateway to
Silverton, Colorado and previously operated as an ore
crushing facility, producing silver, lead, and gold. The
County is using State and EPA funds to install
infrastructure and clean up of lead and arsenic
contamination. EPA Brownfields Sustainability assistance
will help develop strategies on how to implement green
building design, effective stormwater management, green
infrastructure design, and native landscaping on mine-
scarred lands.
The result of this project will provide San Juan County
and the City of Silverton with a preliminary plan and
design reports outlining how to achieve green building
certification in affordable single and multi-family
housing, as well as how to implement green infrastructure
and landscaping in difficult conditions. Environmental
benefits that could be achieved include maximizing native
vegetation, productively using runoff that would
otherwise be diverted into the river, and reducing the use
of fossil fuels for heating and utilities.
