EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, tribes.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA
funds eligible applicants through assistance agreements to
provide training, research, and technical assistance to
facilitate brownfields revitalization.
Organization Description
The National Association of Local Government
Environmental Professionals (NALGEP), a nonprofit
organization founded in 1993, has members who are
responsible for environmental compliance and the
development and implementation of local environmental
policies and programs, including land-use regulations,
zoning law, site cleanup and redevelopment, water
quality, and air quality. NALGEP convenes local
environmental officials to exchange information on
innovative practices, conduct environmental policy
projects, promote environmental training and education,
and communicate the views of local environmental
professionals on national environmental issues.
Project Description
NALGEP will develop new ways to build the nation's
brownfields programs, while also capitalizing on its
previous efforts to create and develop the Brownfield
Communities Network (BCN), which now connects more
than 1,000 brownfields practitioners. NALGEP will use

Development composed of practioners to assist in
performing research and training on sustainable
redevelopment of brownfields. NALGEP also will create
an electronic message forum for the BCN and other
brownfields practitioners to foster peer-to-peer learning
and best practices. It will provide outreach and training to
municipal lawyers on the tools and techniques available
to address potential liability at brownfields. NALGEP
will continue to provide webcasts, regional workshops,
and a periodic BCN Summit that will provide brownfields
practitioner training, technical assistance, lessons from
experts, and tools to build better programs.
