ENERGY STAR
QUALIFIED APPLIANCES

Appliances that have earned the ENERGY STAR meet strict
energy efficiency criteria without sacrificing performance or
design. Look for refrigerators, room air conditioners,
dishwashers, clothes washers, and dehumidifiers that carry the
ENERGY STAR. Their modern designs and premium features are
made to fit the style of your home—while saving energy, money,
and the environment.

HELP FIGHT

GLOBAL WARMING

Electricity used in our homes predominantly comes from the
burning of fossil fuels at power plants, which contributes to
global warming. Simply put, using energy-efficient products and
practices in our homes helps fight global warming by reducing
these greenhouse gas emissions.

If every refrigerator, dishwasher, and clothes washer purchased
in the United States this year were ENERGY STAR qualified,
Americans would prevent 4.5 billion pounds of greenhouse
gas emissions every year. That's equal to the emissions of
370,000 cars!

WHAT IS ENERGY STAR®?
ENERGY STAR is a label that identifies energy-

efficient products, such as appliances, which
meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Products that have earned the ENERGY STAR help
you save energy and money without sacrificing
performance. By using less energy, these products
also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions-
caused by the burning of fossil fuels at power
plants—that contribute to global warming.

More than 50 types of products, including
appliances, lighting, home office equipment, and
heating and cooling equipment can qualify for
the ENERGY STAR.

The ENERGY STAR program helps businesses
and individuals fight global warming through
energy-efficient products and practices.

QUALIFIED APPLIANCES
When buying appliances, remember there are TWO pricetags:
the actual price of the appliance and the energy and water costs
you incur monthly to operate them. By incorporating advanced
technologies and premium features, ENERGY STAR qualified
appliances may help offset initial costs through energy savings
over the life of the unit.
Many qualified appliances often feature the government's
ENERGY STAR directly on the yellow EnergyGuide label. The
EnergyGuide indicates how much energy is used to operate each
appliance and provides an energy scale for you to compare
products. It also lists approximate annual operating costs. Your
exact costs will depend on local utility rates and the type and
source of your energy.

REFRIGERATORS
Refrigerators are one of the highest energy-consuming products
in your home. A new ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator is
20 percent more energy efficient than new conventional models.

DEHUMIDIFIERS
Dehumidifiers reduce the amount of moisture in the air
and have become popular appliances in homes across the United
States, particularly those with basements. Reduced moisture
contributes to a healthy home environment by preventing mold,
mildew, and odor. A 40-pint ENERGY STAR qualified dehumidifier
can save customers more than $250 over the life of the unit—
enough to pay forthe dehumidifier!

ROOM AIR CONDITIONERS
ENERGY STAR qualified room air conditioners are 10 percent
more energy efficient than conventional models. If every room air
conditioner sold were ENERGY STAR qualified, it would prevent
1.3 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually,
equivalent to the emissions from more than 115,000 cars.

DISHWASHERS
New ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers are at least 20 percent
more energy efficient than new conventional models. These
dishwashers also minimize water use and demand on the water
heater through innovative design features and controls.

CLOTHES WASHERS
ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers come in front-loading
and top-loading models. Both use over 50 percent less water and
30 percent less energy than standard clothes washers—saving
a typical household about $50 per year in energy costs.
                                                                                                                             CHANGE THE WORLD
START WITH ENERGY STAR QUALIFIED APPLIANCES
Consider these benefits when replacing old appliances with
ENERGY STAR qualified models.

Improved Refrigerators—Some of today's ENERGY STAR qualified
refrigerators use less electricity than a 60-watt incandescent light
bulb run continuously. More efficient operation means that newer
models are quieter; redesigned doors provide better insulation to
keep food fresher, and deeper doors provide more space for
commonly used items.

Cooler Room Air Conditioners—ENERGY STAR qualified room air
conditioners use high-efficiency motors to remove heat from your
home, providing optimal comfort while using less electricity than
traditional models.

A proportionately sized air conditioner helps ensure proper
temperature adjustments and comfortable humidity levels. When
speaking to your sales representative, consider the size of the
room, whether it gets heavy sunlight or shade, the amount of traffic
through the room, and whether the room is a kitchen.

"Smart" Dishwashers—ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers
have "smart" features that minimize water use and demand on
the water heater and allow for quieter operation and less
pre-rinsing. Construction includes more effective washing action,
energy-efficient motors and other advanced technology, such as
To locate a store near you that carries ENERGY STAR qualified appliances,

sensors that determine the length of the wash cycle and the
temperature of the water necessaryto clean the dishes. Always be
sure to consider factors such as how much water the dishwasher
uses per cycle. Less water means less cost to operate. To save
even more energy, avoid using the heated dry cycle. Instead, let
your dishes air dry.

Advanced Clothes Washer Technology—ENERGY STAR qualified
clothes washers incorporate high-quality features for improved
performance. Gentler operation, more thorough rinsing, and the
removal of more water in the spin cycle make washing clothes
more convenient and help protect your clothing investment.

Front-loading machines feature washtubs that move clothes
horizontally, similar to clothes dryers. Top-loading ENERGY STAR
qualified clothes washers use sensor technology to control water
temperature and volume, then use high-pressure spray rinses to
remove soap from clothes.

Energy-Efficient Dehumidifiers—To qualify for the ENERGY STAR,
a standard-capacity unit must have an energy factor of 1.20 or
higher, and a high-capacity unit must have an energy factor of
1.60 or higher.
