With this award, the State was able to utilize the services of an architecture firm in Honolulu that specializes in green building design to better incorporate green building design principles into the master plan for a future mixed-use development at the site. The green building experts held two charrettes with the community. During the charrettes, the experts explained the many ways in which green building design principles can help enhance occupant comfort and health while reducing the environmental impact. Based upon feedback from the community, the green building experts revised the conceptual master plan and developed an implementation plan. Some of the sustainable design elements of the master plan include: • North-south building orientation for effective shading and day-lighting, as well as passive heating and cooling; • A "main street" town model that is pedestrian friendly and open spaces for reduced heat island effects; • Native plants and trees for shading; Water conservation and "living machines" for onsite waste water treatment; Renewable energy opportunities; and A design that is supportive of key community values, including opportunities for inter-generational interactions and cultural relevance. Proposed conceptual design (elevation view) of the mixed-use developmental planned in Anahola. The master plan calls for phased development. The first phase calls for a senior care congregate living center (29,000 square feet) and an elderly independent living facility (14,000 square feet). Subsequent phases include a Hawaiian charter school (3,000 square feet), retail and office space (25,000-plus square feet), and other support facilities. ------- |
