  Brownfields 2007

  Grant Fact Sheet

           Mantua, NJ

EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, commu-
nities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. Abrownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. On
January 11, 2002, President George W. Bush signed
into law the Small Business Liability Relief and
Brownfields Revitalization Act. Under the
Brownfields Law, EPA provides financial assistance to
eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund
grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Addi-
tionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal
response programs through a separate mechanism.

Community Description

Mantua Township was selected to receive a
brownfields assessment grant. Located in southern
New Jersey, Mantua Township (population 14,846) is
primarily residential, with single-family-home neighbor-
hoods in the north and farmland in the south. More than
62 percent of the township's citizens represent sensitive
populations, including children under the age of 18,
individuals over the age of 65, and mentally and physi-
cally disabled persons. Brownfield sites in Mantua
detract from the economic health and vibrancy of the
township, and have contributed to local groundwater
contamination. Assessments of these sites are needed
to facilitate their reuse. Brownfields redevelopment is
anticipated to deliver important economic benefits for
Mantua Township, such as new jobs, an increased tax
base, and new commercial and residential development.
Assessment Grant
$200,000 for hazardous substances
EPA has selected Mantua Township for a
brownfields assessment grant. Hazardous sub-
stances grant funds will be used to identify and
inventory brownfield sites, characterize and
assess about 15 sites, and conduct community
involvement activities.
