5 o T> Brownfields 2007 Grant Fact Sheet Grand Traverse County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, Ml EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, commu- nities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. Abrownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. On January 11, 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act. Under the Brownfields Law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Addi- tionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Community Description The Grand Traverse County Brownfield Redevelop- ment Authority was selected to receive a brownfields assessment grant. Grand Traverse County (population 83,971) borders Grand Traverse Bay, which is part of Lake Michigan. The abundance of water in the county not only contributes to the recreation and tourism industry, but also to past industrial development. Industries have left a legacy of contaminated sites throughout the county. The state has identified over 64 Assessment Grant $200,000 for petroleum EPA has selected the Grand Traverse County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority for a brownfields assessment grant. Petroleum grant funds will be used to conduct a site inventory and prioritization, Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, and community outreach activities. Therefore, activities described in this fact sheet are subject to change. brownfields sites in the county that are contaminated from operations such as drycleaning, metal working, iron and steel foundries, and unregulated dumping. The county also has about 218 leaking underground storage tanks and substantial oil and gas exploration and production operations. Many more sites remain to be identified. Assessment of the county's brownfields will help promote redevelopment that is necessary to maintain high-quality water resources, promote smart growth, attract tourists, and create more year-round employment to help offset the large seasonal swings of employment in tourism.
