xvEPA United States Environmental Protection Agency March 2008 EPA530-F-08-003 www.epa.gov/osw NPEP Partners Help EPA Reduce Priority Chemicals Action The Environmental Protection Agency has released its National Priority Chemicals Trends Report. The report shows that, between 2002 and August 2007, the National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) partners have reduced more than 3 million pounds of priority chemicals from products and waste. This year's report is the first to show progress towards EPA's new Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) goal of reducing 4 million pounds of priority chemicals as measured by NPEP partner contributions. EPA also uses the Trends Report to identify where priority chemicals are generated and managed and how the use of these chemicals has changed over a five- year period. The report uses newly available data (data reported between 2001 and 2005) from the Toxics Release Inventory to analyze 24 of the 31 priority chemicals found in industrial wastes. TRI is a publicly available database with information on the use, release, and management of more than 650 toxic chemicals within industrial and federal facilities. The Trends Report assists EPA in identifying opportunities for encouraging industrial and federal facilities to voluntarily reduce their use of priority chemicals in products and wastes.
