The term "brownfields site" refers to real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which
may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or
contaminant. Also includes petroleum, controlled substances, and mine scarred lands.
Brownfields Assessment Grants
• Competitive grant funding used to conduct inventories, characterization, assessment, and cleanup
planning.
• Applicants can either apply site-specific or community wide.
• Funding is up to $200K for hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants; and up to $200K
for petroleum-only. Possible site-specific waiver for up to $350,000 per site.
• Eligible entities include states, tribes, local governments, and redevelopment agencies.
Brownfields Cleanup Grants
• Competitive grant funding used to clean up brownfields sites.
• Up to $200K per site to be used for brownfields site cleanup. 20% recipient match required.
• Eligible entities include states, tribes, local governments, redevelopment agencies, and non-
profits.
Brownfields Cleanup Revolving Loan Fund (BCRLF) Grants
• Competitive grant funding used to capitalize a loan program for clean up of brownfields sites.
• Can also provide cleanup subgrants for brownfields sites.
• Up to $1.0M. 20% recipient match required.
• Eligible entities include states, tribes, local governments, and redevelopment agencies.
Targeted Brownfields Assessments (TBAs)
• Regional program to assist communities by providing assessment services on brownfields sites.
• Primary selection criteria includes city-owned and abondoned sites. Must show strong public
benefit.
• Ongoing selection process - guidelines available on the EPA Region 8 brownfields website.
Job Training (JT) Grants
• Competitive grant funding for training of low income populations living near brownfields in j obs
related to the environment.
• Eligible entities include states, tribes, political subdivisions, non-profits and educational
institutions.
State and Tribal Response Program Grants
• Program to establish and/or enhance brownfields response programs in states and tribes.
• Up to $50 million (per year) nationally.
