U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 wants to update you and answer
your questions about new developments in the cleanup of the Tittabawassee
and Saginaw rivers and Saginaw Bay.

On May 26, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson announced that EPA, working
closely with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, will take lead
responsibility for cleanup efforts in significant portions of the Saginaw Bay
watershed under the federal Superfund program. EPA's resources and expertise
are necessary to accelerate site investigation and cleanup and protect human
health and the environment.

As part of the overall cleanup plan, EPA will resume negotiations aimed at a
legally enforceable agreement requiring The Dow Chemical Co. to sample the
rivers and bay for dioxin contamination and identify options for cleanup.

Administrator Jackson has pledged an unprecedented degree of transparency
during these negotiations so the public has a full opportunity to be heard. EPA
has also developed milestones and schedules for achieving a comprehensive
and expeditious cleanup. In addition, EPA is committed to implementing a
comprehensive public involvement plan.

EPA will present the details at a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June
17, at Saginaw Valley State University, Curtiss Hall, Banquet Rooms A & B, 7400
Bay Road, Saginaw.
