                    Issue #65
                   July 23,2008
Demolition of the Milltown
Dam spillway continues.
The photo to the right
shows the spillway and
what remains of the radial
gate and divider block ar-
eas. Dam demolition is go-
ing really well — even
faster than expected.
The dam should be com-
pletely removed by fall.

This week, removal of the
           left (south)
           abutment of
the former Milltown Dam begins. Project personnel will be working right
next to the bluff for the next 3 weeks.
For safety reasons, the bluff is temporarily closed to the public.

   Excavating contaminated sediments unearths
the pre-Reservoir Clark Fork River flood plain.
   Note the exposed tree stumps.
Workers continue to load sediments onto rail cars
destined for use in reclaiming the Anaconda
Smelter Superfund Site.
Continue excavating sediments and loading 45 rail cars each day. To date,
1,161,962 tons (1,010,402 cubic yards) of sediment have been hauled to the Ana-
conda Smelter Superfund Site for use in site reclamation. The project is getting
close to the halfway point for sediment excavation and hauling.
In June, 172 tons of rebar and steel removed from the dam were recycled.
Installing a well to begin de-watering triangle sediments in preparation for removal.
Work continues for replacement of State Highway 200 and Pedestrian bridges over
the Blackfoot River in Milltown. Both Bridges should be in this fall.
