EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical
assistance to support brownfields projects in achieving
greener, more sustainable revitalization. Sustainability
Pilots are demonstration projects that will serve as models
for other communities across the country.

Project Description
EPA has selected Delta Sigma Theta Sorority to receive a
Brownfields Sustainability Pilot. Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority—a nonprofit organization of college educated
women performing public service that benefits the
African-American community—will receive EPA
assistance to help convert an abandoned gas station in
Portland, Oregon into a community center with
transitional housing. The property was originally assessed
under the Brownfields Showcase Communities Initiative
and needs additional evaluation for Sustainability features.
EPA will provide technical support for design plans
associated with infrastructure reuse and recycling, green
building features, stormwater management, and
greenspace enhancements. The sorority owns the property
and is committed to making it a clean, habitable space.
The transitional housing will be constructed using surplus
cargo containers, which is a creative reuse of industrial
materials.
