   Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB)
               Communities Fact Sheet
EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, tribes, communities, and other
stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably
reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. TAB provides technical assistance
to Brownfields Grantees and other communities facing brownfields challenges.
TAB providers assist communities with reviewing and explaining brownfield
related technical reports; providing information about basic science, environmental
policy and other technical matters related to brownfield sites; helping to understand
health risks associated with a brownfield property; providing information to
assist with understanding environmental issues and how they affect brownfield
cleanup and redevelopment; and facilitating brownfield redevelopment efforts by
supporting community and other stakeholder involvement activities.
Organization Description

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a science and technology
university that has been providing brownfield services to Northeast U.S.
communities for 14 years. NJIT's TAB program employs a multi-disciplinary TAB
team consisting of professionals with academic research, government, industry
and consulting experience. The program taps the collective experience of staff who
have participated in brownfields assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment.
Technical Assistance Provided

New Jersey Institute of Technology TAB team provides assistance to communities
throughout the brownfields reuse process. From explaining legal and regulatory
programmatic requirements to providing technical assistance with site assessments
and remediation, the professionals employed by NJIT work hand-in-hand with
communities seeking their assistance. NJIT provides, among other things: direct
technical mentoring; community workshops and other outreach; strategic guidance
for cleanup and redevelopment; and grant application assistance. These services are
provided at no charge to communities, regional entities, and nonprofits interested in
obtaining EPA Brownfields grants, as well as to those who are already grantees.
