A Watershed Academy Webcast

The Clean Water Act (CWA) is the cornerstone of surface water quality protection
in the United States. The statute employs a variety of regulatory and non-
regulatory tools to reduce direct pollutant discharges into waterways, finance
municipal wastewater treatment facilities, and manage polluted runoff. These tools are
employed to achieve the broader goal of restoring and maintaining the chemical,
physical, and biological integrity of the nation's waters so that they can support "the
protection and propagation offish, shellfish, and wildlife and recreation in and on the
water."

                                                    Clean Water Act
Join us for this first in a series of Webcasts on the CWA. The first Webcast will provide an Introduction to the CWA including
a brief history of the Act, an explanation of technology vs. water quality-based approaches, and a brief overview of key
components of the Act and related EPA regulations. Future Webcasts will focus on key aspects of the CWA including water
quality standards, monitoring and assessment, total maximum daily loads, programs for managing point sources and
nonpoint sources, and wetland protection.

Instructor:

William (Bill) Painter, Environmental Scientist, EPA's Watershed Branch, has been with EPA for over
20 years and during much of this time he has worked on issues related to implementing the Clean Water
Act (CWA). Before coming to EPA, Bill worked for a variety of nonprofit organizations on a range of
projects, including several related to protection and restoration of the water resources of the United
                  States.

Among Bill's EPA duties, he has provided CWA basic training on over 100 occasions. Trainees have
included personnel from U.S. EPA, other federal agencies, state agencies, local government, and a
variety of stakeholder groups. Bill also developed a popular online Watershed Academy Web module on
an "Introduction to the Clean Water Act" that is posted at http://www.epa.qov/watertrain/cwa/.

The Watershed Academy
