                       Wastewater Treatment and Drinking Water

                       	System
Problem: The Matamoros project in Region 6
   exemplifies the quality-of-life improvements for
a community lacking access to proper sanitation
and reliable drinking water service. Before the
project was completed, Matamoros was the
largest community along the US/Mexico border
   without wastewater treatment facilities. Raw
sewage was discharged daily into the Rio
Grande; 94% of the population only had drinking
water service and that was also limited to for 1-
   3 hours per day.

Solution: The project included a new 8.8 MGD
   wastewater treatment plant and extensive
improvements to the drinking water system. The
project greatly improved Rio Grande water
quality, removing 16,000 pounds per day of
pollutants and giving 418,141 residents reliable
access to safe drinking water and sanitation
   service.
