Mexicali II Wastewater Treatment Plant Problem: The New River has been considered one of the most polluted rivers in the United States. The river passes directly through two sister cities in Region 9: Mexicali (Baja) and Calexico (California) which suffered the pervasive stench of raw sewage. Solution: With the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, collection lines and a force main, 15 MGD of raw sewage is now collected, treated, disinfected. As the discharge makes its way 28 miles south, New River water quality data at the U.S. border indicates that concentration of bacteria have dropped by 98%. The plant currently serves 235,000 Mexicali residents. s ^ U.S.-Mexico Border Water Infrastructure Program ------- |
