Protection Plan
Background
Location: Illinois.
Water Supply: Macon-Taylorville Strip Aquifer.
Source Water Assessment: This source water protection plan was completed in 2001, in
advance of the source water assessment.
Priority Contamination Threats
Major threats to this aquifer include feed lots, septic systems, above ground storage
tanks, underground storage tanks, livestock waste treatment facilities, treated
wood/lumberyards, wells (such as irrigation wells), and lagoons.
Local Team and Developing the Protection Plan
Macon-Taylorville Strip Aquifer Source Water Protection Committee.
Management Measures
The source water protection plan includes the following measures:
• Created educational outreach brochures for distribution to those who live and
work within the communities' recharge areas.
• Incorporated coverage of wells and recharge areas into the Christian and Macon
County's Geographic Information System. Provide Contingency Plans to the
Christian and Macon County Emergency Services Disaster Agencies for
incorporation into the disaster plans.
• Communities purchased groundwater flow models for educational purposes for
use in the schools within the communities.
• Worked with the local Natural Resources Conservation Service and Soil & Water
Conservation Service to promote sign up for recharge area acreage into the
United States Department of Agriculture's Conservation Reserve Program.
