Status: The Milltown Project continues to go very well and is on schedule.
                                                            Issue #85

REMEDIATION AND RESTORATION
• As of Monday, 2,739,616 tons (~ 2,107,396
cubic yards) of sediment have been excavated,
loaded and hauled off-site. This portion of the
project is 96% complete. Removal, loading, and
hauling of the contaminated sediments to the
Anaconda Smelter Superfund Site should be
   complete in September.
• Continuing to excavate sediments from under
the area where the rail spur used to run and
in the Areas M and J — where the new
Clark Fork River channel and floodplain will be created. As of Sunday, approximately
93,000 cubic yards have been excavated from Areas M and J. Please see map belc.v.
• Continue loading train in two sections, switching trains around 10:30 am and in the middle
of the night, disrupting traffic across the rail lines in Milltown at most 10 minutes each time.
• Backfilling 35,000 cubic yards of general fill in the floodplain in Area A terrace.
• Work continues to divert the Clark Fork River flows around the CFR 3b area. The down-
stream diversion is done; the upstream diversion will be completed by the end of this week.

                                                  Russ FORBA RETIRING
After 33 years with EPA, Russ
Forba is retiring. He has led
                                                  the complex Milltown cleanup
                                                  since 1997 - a time when dam
removal was only a dream for
                                                  some—until now with the dam
                                                  and nearly all the contaminated
                                                  sediments removed. The local
                                                  drinking water supply is already
                                                  recovering. Never one to sit
                                                  still, Russ has some "bright"
                                                  ideas for retirement. Look for
                                                  him installing solar panels or
