  These updates are intended to
   provide you with the latest
  information about remediation,
  restoration and redevelopment
      activities at the
Milltown Reservoir Superfund Site.
REMEDIATION
• As of Sunday, 2,616,775
   tons (~ 2,012,903 cubic
   yards) of sediment have
   been excavated, loaded
   and hauled off-site.
   The Milltown project has
   achieved another mile-
   stone - removing over 2
   million cubic yards of
   contaminated sediments
   of the 2.2 million slated
   fro removal. This portion
   of the project is 91%
   complete. Removal, load-
   ing, and hauling of the
   contaminated sediments ^
   to the Anaconda Smelter
   Superfund Site should be
   complete by September 2009.
  • Beginning today (6/24/09), Montana Rail Link will be removing another 1200 feet of
rail line from the on-site rail spur. This is in addition to the 600 feet of rail line MRL
removed in May. With the shortened track, the train will be split into two sections for load-
ing the sediments. To switch out the trains for loading, the trains will be using the rail
across Highway 210 E near the Lutheran Church and also near Harold's Club. Switching is
expected to occur around 10:30 am and in the middle of the night and should disrupt traffic
for less than ten minutes each time. EPA has coordinated this new train schedule with the
Banner School, local Fire and Sherriff's Offices, and Missoula County.
• Continue pumping from nine wells along the diversion dike at the upstr earn end of the
Bypass Channel to keep the area drier during excavation of the new Claris Fork River channel.
                                                                            -£,-TV :v^*.Ij?fl^*l--iW- -*'
                                                                                 ' <*-*i*
Excavating sediments from along the bed of the rail spur.

  RESTORATION
  • Continue excavating Sediment Accumulation Area II (sub-areas L&J) to prepare for the
new Clark Fork River channel and re-graded f loodplain. Material from this area is being
stockpiled along the Bypass Channel and will be used later in the bypass Channel reclamation
scheduled for 2011. To date, work crews have removed 67,000 cubic yards of material.
 > Removed 6,000 cubic yards of buried A-horizon soils from the new river channel bottom.
34,000 cubic yards of Buried have been stockpiled so far for later use in river restoration.
