Abandoned Coal Mine Areas in West Virginia with Non-Grid Connected Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Energy Generation Potential Solar Resource kWh/m2/day Resource Potential <4 >4-5 >5-6 >6 Moderate Good Very Good Excellent Abandoned Coal Mine Areas Screening Criteria Solar resource availability, site size, and distance to transmission lines and roads are not screening criteria All sites are generally considered favorable for siting non-grid connected PV %„, This map was developed by SRA International for the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Results are based on site screening criteria adapted from National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) criteria and GIS data provided by NREL, EPA and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. This map and its associated data are intended to provide a general understanding of the renewable energy potential of abandoned coal mine areas in West Virginia: additional site specific analysis is required to determine the actual potential of these sites. These sites are tracked and monitored by state agencies.
