U.S.  ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY CLIMATE PROTECTION  AWARDS
INTRODUCTION

The Climate Protection Partnerships Division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invites
nominations for the Climate Protection Awards. This award program was established in 1998 to recognize
exceptional leadership, outstanding innovation, personal dedication, and technical achievements in protecting the
climate.

BACKGROUND & ORGANIZATION

Thus far, over one hundred and fifty awards have been  presented to outstanding individuals, dedicated companies,
forward-thinking organizations and government institutions from many countries, including Argentina, Australia,
Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Chile, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, South Korea,
Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Winners are selected based on outstanding leadership,  innovation,  personal dedication and technical achievements
in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the  Earth's climate. Accomplishments can include
leadership, stewardship, product introduction, pollution prevention, policy innovation, and engineering innovation.

AWARDS PANEL & SELECTION OF WINNERS

The U.S. EPA Climate Protection Partnerships Division  will assemble an international panel of judges comprised of
previous Climate Protection Award winners.  With the advice of this panel, EPA will make the final selections. The
judges represent government, industry, and non-governmental organizations.

INSTRUCTIONS

All applications must include an official cover letter from the nominator, a completed application form and  a one
page summary of accomplishments. Electronic submissions are preferred. As the judges will not be able  to
conduct on-site visits, applicants are encouraged to submit supporting materials including  but not limited to:
photographs, technical descriptions, news clippings, and press releases. Please note that all submissions are final
and neither the application nor supporting materials will  be returned.

ELIGIBILITY
Candidates may be from anywhere in the world.
Individuals and organizations may work for the public or private sector.
Candidates may be either self-nominated or nominated by a third party.
APPLICATION PROCESS	

Applications should include a standard application form, a cover letter from the nominating
individual/organization, a one page summary of the candidate's accomplishment, and supporting
materials.
SELECTION CRITERIA	

Winners selected on the basis of originality and public purpose; persuasive, moral or
organizational leadership; global perspective and implication; and reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions. Actual (as opposed to anticipated) results/reductions are preferred.
JUDGING PROCESS	

Applications will be screened by a panel of judges selected for expertise and mindful of
geographical balance.  Past award winners also serve on the judging panel.
EPA makes the final selection of award winners.
PRESENTATION OF AWARDS	

Winners will be announced at the annual Climate Protection Awards Ceremony in Washington
D.C.. The ceremony will take place in the fall.
