Examples include conceptual models, curriculum materials, hands- on lessons/ interactive exercises, journal record-keeping for scientific method data collection and environmental awareness training. The services offered through the program include teacher training, workshop presentations, lecture-demo participation, field trips and lab tours — all of these can be customized to the needs of the requester. Teacher Training Chem-Com (Chemistry-in-the-Community) is a program taught by a certified American Chemical Society (ACS) high school science teacher. Participating teachers from various Southern states have completed the courses and returned to their school systems to teach environmental science and/or to train other teachers. Learning about environmental scientific research indirectly enhances our way of life ------- Environmental Science Education Lab Tours Tours of our Action Center for Environmental Learning (ACEL) highlight eight stations manned by research scientists featuring various environmental issues. Students rotate to each station for a two-hour, hands-on learning session with specific interactive models. The goal of the Center is to present a holistic view of environmental problems and solutions and to raise awareness of environmental stewardship. Issues explored include watersheds, ground water, run-off, landfills, pollution prevention, composting, and auto emissions. Guest Teacher The ESE program fulfills requests from school systems to conduct interactive learning sessions in conjunction with students' environment and health units of study. Student Training Undergraduate students from across the United States are trained in our laboratory either under the auspices of a Memorandum of Understanding or through various types of funding assistance in cooperation with institutions of higher learning. All efforts are designed to educate and train potential future scientists and engineers. Also, the ESE program is a valuable source of assistance for young students preparing for science fair projects. Knowledge of credible environmental science makes a strong foundation for improving environmental stewardship.
