I x>EPA Brochure I Disaster Response I HAWK Camera on Helicopter Following an emergency, the EPA uses a helicopter equipped with a high-tech camera to detect chemical spills and leaks from a variety of sources as part of the rapid needs assessment. The helicopter is equipped with a specialized infrared gas-imaging camera, called HAWK, which can detect potentially hazardous chemical releases from tanks, barges, pipelines, rail cars, industrial facilities and other operations. The helicopter equipped with the HAWK camera flies at low levels and at low speeds. Inspectors or emergency response personnel use the HAWK camera for follow-up investigations if releases are detected either in a helicopter or by hand. The HAWK camera is another tool in EPA's ongoing efforts to rapidly identify and address potential environmental threats in affected areas. vvEPA United States I Rtgional Office I Public Information Center I Report Oil Spills, Chemical Releases Environmental Protection j 1445 Ross A^rtue I 1-800-S87-6063 | or Terrorist'Attwily Agemv « Dallas,Texas 75202 I Monday-Fr!day;9 am-4p.m. I 1-800-424-8802 ------- |
