Current activities
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
removal crews completed pulling and staging the
concrete slab that was under the building. More than
450 tons of the concrete has been taken off-site.
Based on the analytical results and categorization of
the grids, soil sampling resumed to a depth of two
feet, and excavation activities will resume. Two grids
located along Delphine Street have been excavated
and five other areas have been graded and capped
with clay.
Other disposal of on-site waste activities includes the
transport of all remaining oil solid and sludge waste
recovered from the kerosene sumps beneath the hy-
draulic presses. A total of 2,500 gallons were taken
off site, bringing the total removed from the hydraulic
press sumps to more than 5,200 gallons.
One hundred fifty four (154) tons of the solidified
basement sludge material was moved off site to an
approved landfill. The Texas Department of Trans-
portation resumed their survey and geo-prospecting
operations south of the Van der Horst site around the
State Highway 34 corridor.
What's next?
The EPA has proposed the Van der Horst site to the
National Priorities List (NPL). The Site is being pro-
posed to the National Priorities List because of the
presence of contaminants in the surface water and
ground water underlying the facility and nearby resi-
dential areas. The NPL proposal package is available
for review at the:

Community members are invited to comment on the
proposal to place this Site on the NPL. A 60-day pub-
lic comment period began September 25, 2009 and
ends November 25, 2009. Please send written com-

History
The EPA, in cooperation with the Texas Commission
on Environmental Quality and the City of Terrell, are
working on the cleanup of the abandoned plating fa-
cility located at 419 E. Grove Street, in Terrell,
Texas.
The site has a large basement sump in the northern
building, which is sloped and is reportedly 10 feet
deep on the south side of the building and 15 feet on
the north side of the building. This sump was filled
with chromium rinse water/plating waste. Several
plating vats contained unknown plating
wastes/solutions. Numerous smaller sumps are pre-
sent in the building and formerly contained a mixture
of rainwater and unknown chemicals including kero-
sene, iron plating wastes, and chromium plating
wastes.

Los equipos de remocion de la Agenda de Protection
Ambiental de los Estados Unidos (EPA, por sus siglas
en ingles) completaron la remocion y la reubicacion
de la losa de concrete que estaba bajo el edificio. Mas
de 450 toneladas de concrete se han transportado
fuera del sitio.
De acuerdo con los resultados analiticos y
caracterizacion del las cuadriculas de muestreo, se
reanudo el muestreo de suelo a una profundidad de
dos pies y se reanudaran las actividades de
excavation. Dos cuadriculas de muestreo situadas a lo
largo de la calle Delphine Street han sido excavadas y
cinco otras han sido niveladas y cubiertas con arcilla
Otra actividades de elimination de residues en el sitio
incluyen el transporte de todos los residues solidos de
aceite y lodos residuales recuperados de los
sumideros de kerosene bajo las prensas hidraulicas.
Se han transportado fuera del sitio un total de 2,500
galones, con lo que el total removido de la prensa
hidraulica asciende a mas de 5,200 galones.
Ciento cincuenta y cuatro (154) toneladas de material
de lodos solidificados se transportaron fuera del sitio
a un vertedero autorizado. El Departamento de
Transporte de Texas reinicio su estudio y operaciones
de prospeccion geologica al sur del sitio Van der
Horst y en el entorno del corredor de la carretera
estatal 34.

La EPA propuso el sitio Van der Horst a la Lista de
Prioridades Nacionales (NPL, por sus siglas en
ingles). El sitio esta siendo propuesto a la Lista de
Prioridades Nacionales debido a la presencia de
contaminantes en el agua superficial y subterranea
subyacente al sitio y cerca de zonas residenciales. El
paquete de propuesta de NPL esta disponible para
revision en:

Se invita a los miembros de la comunidad a hacer

Historia
La EPA, en cooperation con la Comision de Calidad
Ambiental de Texas y la Cuidad de Terrell, esta
trabajando en la limpieza de un sitio abandonado
donde existian instalaciones de recubrimiento de
metales ubicado en 419 E. Grove Street, Terrell,
Texas.
El sitio cuenta con un gran desagiie en el sotano del
edificio norte y se informo que esta inclinado y tiene
una profundidad de 10 pies en el lado sur del edificio
y 15 pies en el lado norte del edificio. Este desagiie
esta lleno de aguas de enjuague de cromo/ aguas de
desechos de procesos de recubrimiento de metales.
Hay varies recipientes de recubrimientos de metales

llenos con desechos o soluciones desconocidas.
Numerosos desagiies pequefios estan presentes en el
edificio y contienen una mezcla de agua de lluvia y
quimicos desconocidos como queroseno, desechos de
hierro cromado y desechos de cromo.
