Grant Fact Sheet
Elmore, OH
EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, commu-
nities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. Abrownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. On
January 11, 2002, President George W. Bush signed
into law the Small Business Liability Relief and
Brownfields Revitalization Act. Under this law, EPA
provides financial assistance to eligible applicants
through four competitive grant programs: assessment
grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and
job training grants. Additionally, funding support is
provided to state and tribal response programs through
a separate mechanism.
Community Description
The Village of Elmore was selected to receive a
brownfields assessment grant. Located in northern
Ohio, Elmore (population 1,426) lies in a rural area of
the primarily agricultural Ottawa County. The targeted
former Hunt's Sohio Gasoline Service Station operated
from 1978 through 1994. Limited services, including
vehicle oil changes and tire repair, were provided at the
site until 2005. Although the four underground gasoline
tanks at the site were emptied and the service island
pumps removed in 1994, the tanks remain on the
property. Limited sampling around the tanks has
indicated that petroleum releases had occurred at the
site. The dilapidated service station, located at the
north end of the village, is one of the first sights seen
by visitors entering the city from that direction. The site
poses risks to human health and the environment and
Assessment Grant
$150,000 for petroleum
EPA has selected the Village of Elmore for a
brownfields assessment grant. Petroleum grant
funds will be used to conduct Phase I and II
environmental site assessments of the former
Hunt's Sohio Gasoline Service Station at 408 Rice
Street. There are four underground storage tanks
at the site that have been out of service for about
13 years. Grant funds also will be used to support
community outreach activities.
