5 o T> Brownfields 2007 Grant Fact Sheet Main South Community Development Corporation, Worcester, MA EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, commu- nities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. Abrownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. On January 11, 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act. Under the Brownfields Law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Addi- tionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Community Description The Main South Community Development Corporation was selected to receive a brownfields cleanup grant. Located in the City of Worcester, the Main South neighborhood (population 3,679) is one of the most distressed and densely developed neighborhoods in the city. From 1960 to 2000, the neighborhood's population decreased 35 percent. In 2000, 40 percent of the Cleanup Grant $200,000 for hazardous substances EPA has selected the Main South Community Development Corporation for a brownfields cleanup grant. Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to clean up a 1.7-acre site located at 93 Grand Street in Worcester. The site was used by a manufacturing company and is contaminated with co-mingled petroleum, volatile organic com- pounds, metals, and PCBs. Grant funds also will be used to support community involvement activities. The neighborhood is dominated by large tracts of old mill space, with at least 50 acres of mill buildings. Cleanup of the target site is part of a larger effort to redevelop a 5.3-acre brownfields area for housing and commercial, retail, and light industrial uses. The redevel- oped area will generate an estimated $ 170,000 in new tax revenue and spur further revitalization in the Main South neighborhood.
