EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership
The SmartWay Transport Partnership is an innovative
partnership program between the U.S. Environmen-
tal Protection Agency (EPA) and the freight sector.
SmartWay provides businesses in the freight sector
with tools and resources, funding opportunities,
technical expertise, and information regarding
best practices to reduce greenhouse gases and
diesel emissions. SmartWay takes a multipronged
approach to meeting the technological, information-
al, and financial challenges facing freight operators
across multiple sectors.

A Great Opportunity to Save
SmartWay aims to reduce the cost of doing busi-
ness for freight vehicles, including trucks, trains, and
ships, by helping companies increase their use of
fuel-efficient technologies and strategies that lower
      SmartWay Benefits
      • Reduced fuel costs
      • Payback on investment within just one to
         three years on most technologies
      • Up to $9,000 in cost savings per truck
         each year after payback period
      • Reduced maintenance costs
      • National recognition
      • Business-to-business advantages
emissions. SmartWay shippers reduce carbon emis-
sions through mode choice and carrier selection. In
turn, carriers optimize their practices to gain shipper
contracts. SmartWay helps partners find energy cost
savings, making them successful—and green—
industry leaders.

The SmartWay Brand
To help buyers identify SmartWay programs and
products, EPA developed the SmartWay brand and
associated marks to indicate superior environmental
and energy-efficient performance (specifically, reduc-
tion of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants).
Partners and stakeholders may use the marks in
advertising and business communications, for public-
ity endeavors, and on promotional items. The brand
also signifies the partnership among government,
business, and consumers to protect our environment,
reduce fuel consumption, and improve our air quality
for future generations.

SmartWay Expansion to New
Transportation and Assessment Tools
In response to the evolving needs of the freight
industry, EPA is expanding the program and rolling
out the next phase of SmartWay. For the first time,
shippers will be able to calculate the environmental
impact of various transportation modes, while car-
riers will be able to quantify their carbon footprint.
SmartWay's expansion will serve as the global pro-
tocol for measuring and reducing carbon emissions
from global freight transportation and, when fully
implemented, may result in a comprehensive data-
base of the freight industry's carbon dioxide (CO2),
particulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxides (NOX)
emissions.

SmartWay Technology
SmartWay verifies the fuel-saving benefits of certain
types of equipment for use in long-distance trucking
as well as marine and rail applications. Technologies
that meet the criteria are included on EPA's list of veri-
fied technologies. EPA verifies the following techno-
logical device catagories to reduce emissions and
fuel consumption from line-haul, combination tractors
and trailers:
• Idling reduction
• Aerodynamic technologies
• Low-rolling resistance tires

SmartWay Finance
SmartWay recognizes the financial hurdles faced by
an industry consisting of many small businesses. To
help freight trucking companies overcome these
obstacles and purchase fuel-efficient, low-pollution
technologies, SmartWay partners with third-party
fiscal institutions to offer financial tools, such as
reduced-interest loans with flexible terms for truck
owners and operators. Truck owners and operators
can take advantage of these financing options and
offset the cost of purchasing or installing a Smart-
Way Upgrade Kit, designed to reduce idling and
improve aerodynamics.

SmartWay Certified Vehicles
As part of SmartWay, EPA developed performance
specifications and a labeling and recognition
program for heavy-duty tractors and trailers that
are high environmental performers. SmartWay
Certified Tractors and Trailers are among the most
fuel-efficient line-haul tractors and trailers available.
     www.epa.gov/greenvehicles
EPA's Green Vehicle Guide provides informa-
     tion about the environmental performance
of vehicles and offers the user dynamic
     search and sort capabilities. Side-by-side
comparisons can be performed for up to
three vehicles, and searches can be custom-
ized based on user choices by using the
Advanced Search function. Photos of models
are displayed (if available) for basic searches
     and side-by-side comparisons.

They are outfitted at the point-of-sale with Smart-
Way-verified technologies and other fuel-saving
features.
In addition to tractors and trailers, SmartWay certifies
light-duty vehicles (passenger cars and light trucks).
SmartWay also encourages its partners to visit EPA's
Green Vehicle Guide, an online resource that makes
it easy to identify the most environmentally friendly
vehicles for corporate fleets or personal needs.

Smart for the Environment
Together, rail and truck transport consume more than 35 billion gallons of diesel fuel per year. This
represents more than 350 million metric tons of CO2 annually. These emissions are expected to increase
25 percent by 2012, reaching 450 million metric tons of CO2.
SmartWay is making a difference. SmartWay has helped the freight sector reduce 14.7 million metric
tons of CO2, 215,000 tons NOx, and 8,000 tons PM, while also saving 1.5 billion gallons of fuel
($3.6 billion in fuel costs).
