Heifer will seek a LEED certification at the Silver or Gold level for the 100,000-square-foot building. Sustainable, environmentally sound features of the building, including alternative energy, land and water conservation techniques, and efficient uses of natural resources, will be highlighted in public education programs. Heifer used its Green Building on Brownfields Pilot support to retain the services of a landscape architect that specializes in sustainable design and interpretive landscapes. The landscape architect worked with Heifer to incorporate educational features into the design of its parking area, which will feature bio-swales, aholding pond for landscape irrigation, minimal impermeable surfaces, and constructed wetlands with native plants. The design will enable visitors to learn how the parking area conserves water and protects the watershed with an aesthetically pleasing design. Some of the educational features may include nature trails and signs that tell the site' s green design story. The Heifer International Headquarters building will be one of the first buildings with significant green design features in the Little Rock area. For this reason, the project is also providing invaluable experience to local architecture, engineering and construction firms in green design and construction practices.
