5-EPA
Fact Sheet: Amendment to Extend 2010
Reporting Deadline
Reporting of Greenhouse Gases (40 CFR Part 98)
Action

   • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule amending the Greenhouse Gas
(GHG) Reporting Program. This rule extends the reporting deadline for 2010 GHG data to September 30,
       2011.

   • With the amendment, EPA has extended the reporting deadline this year to allow adequate time for the
testing and refinement of EPA's new online GHG reporting tool (e-GGRT) that facilities will use to submit
data. This extension will give industry the opportunity to test the tool, provide feedback, and have
sufficient time to become familiar with it prior to reporting.
   • This action effectively extends the deadline for registering with EPA's online reporting system (e-GGRT)
to August 1, 2011, 60 days before the extended reporting deadline.

   • This action does not affect what data must be reported and does not change the reporting deadline for future
       years.

   • EPA maintains its commitment to making the data public by the end of this year.

Background

   • On October 30, 2009, EPA finalized annual reporting requirements of GHGs for large emissions sources in
the United States and U.S. suppliers of products that would emit GHGs if released or combusted. EPA
estimates that the rule covers about 85-90% percent of the total GHG emissions from the U.S.

   • This program will provide high-quality data that will help industries and businesses find ways to be more
efficient and save money and that will be useful for Congress, state agencies, non-governmental
       organizations, and the public.

Next Steps and Implementation

   • EPA will continue to conduct outreach and training webinars on the reporting requirements and use of
e-GGRT. Information will be posted on the GHG Reporting Program website and RSS feed.
