FIELD WORK BEGINS:
Field work at the Dewey Loeffel Landfill Superfund Site began with a site
walkover on April 15, 2011 to prepare for the geophysical surveys scheduled
to begin the week of April 18. The landfill surveys will use both magnetic
and electric conductivity techniques to assess the presence of residual
sources of buried contamination in the landfill, and other tests will be
utilized to assess the landfill cover. Preparatory work for the installation of
groundwater monitoring wells to further evaluate groundwater and
contaminants will also begin.
These activities begin the investigation of the landfill and groundwater
contamination components of the site. Additional details, as well as future
activities, are documented in a work plan, which will be available soon on
the Dewey Loeffel page of the EPA Web site at
http://www.epa.gov/region2/superfund/npl/dewev/.
LETTER OF INTENT RECEIVED FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
GRANT (TAG):
EPA has received a Letter of Intent to apply for a Technical Assistance
Grant at the Dewey Loeffel Landfill Superfund Site from "United Neighbors
Concerned About GE Dewey Loeffel Landfill (UNCAGED)". By law, only
one grant for up to $50,000 may be awarded to a citizen's group at any one
site on the National Priorities List. Because of this limitation, and in order to
ensure that all community views are represented in recipient groups, EPA
encourages all citizens' groups interested in applying for a technical
assistance grant at the Dewey Loeffel Landfill Superfund Site to consolidate
with "UNCAGED" and file a joint application. For more information, visit:
http://www.epa.gov/region2/superfund/npl/dewev/. or contact Larisa
Romanowski, Community Involvement Coordinator at (518) 747-4389.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
Over the next several weeks, EPA will be conducting community interviews
with local officials, community organizations, and individuals for the
Community Involvement Plan for the Dewey Loeffel Landfill Superfund
Site. These discussions will inform EPA's outreach activities over the course
of the project and will help EPA identify the best ways of sharing and
receiving information. If you or your organization would be willing to meet
with members of the EPA project team, contact Larisa Romanowski,
Community Involvement Coordinator, at (518) 747-4389.
In addition, several local organizations have expressed an interest in forming
a Community Advisory Group (CAG) for the Dewey Loeffel Landfill
Superfund Site. Any group that has an interest in participating in a CAG
should contact Larisa Romanowski at the Hudson River Field Office.
