& U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 3 Chillum Site - Gasoline Fact Sheet Remedy Implementation Status Update March 2011 Background EPA issued its Final Decision and Response to Public Comments outlining the final remedy for the gasoline release that occurred at the former Chevron gasoline station previously owned by Chevron USA, located in Chillum, Md. The release impacts the neighboring Lamond-Riggs Park community located in the District of Columbia (D.C.). Final Remedy Subsequent to the Final Decision on the remedy selection, EPA issued to Chevron USA, an Administrative Order on Consent (AOC) which specifies the work and the timetable upon which Chevron must perform the required work to implement the Final Remedy for the gasoline release at the Chillum Site. The AOC issued to Chevron became effective January 2009. v ' » % S _ ,' , _ . / x <• -~ '^ Area A is located on and around the former gasoline station. Work here includes the expansion of the existing Dual Phase Extraction (DPE) system by installing one angled recovery well that will terminate under Eastern Avenue. In addition, four new DPE wells will be installed in and around the parking lot of the shopping center. All of the new wells will be connected to the existing DPE system. Area B is in the alley north of Oglethorpe Street (referred to as Oglethorpe Alley). Work here includes the installation of two on-site groundwater remediation wells. Construction in Area A is scheduled to begin during the Spring of 2011, and in Area B during the Summer of 2011, pending final permit approval from the requisite D.C. government agencies. ERA's Proposed System Expansion GroundmterardSoilfepor to Treatment Sysietn Eastern Avenue Riggs to Parking Lot Vertical Extraction Well Submersible " Pump ------- Area C is located in the alley north of Nicholson Street (referred to as Nicholson Alley). Work in this area will include the installation of a series of oxygen injection wells in the alley to create an oxygen reactive zone. Construction in Area C has begun with the installation of 5 oxygen wells completed. The second phase of construction entails installation of an underground vault and piping trenches. This work is scheduled to take place in the Spring of 2011, pending final permitting from the Department of Transportation. The groundwater remediation systems for all three areas are expected to be completed and operational by the Fall of 2011.
