The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 2 is providing you
with this update on the status of their cleanup of lead contaminated soils at the Phase 2
Residential Properties on the east and west sides of Transit Road in the Village of
Depew, NY.
The site consists of 66 residential properties, 64 of which are located east of Transit Road
on Tyler, Rumford, Brewster, and Lincoln Streets as well as Walden Avenue and two
properties west of Transit Road on George Urban Blvd. and Harvard Avenue.
In 2009, 34 residential properties were remediated and the remaining 32 were completed in
2010. EPA removed over 11,000 tons of lead contaminated soils and restored with clean
topsoil, new shrubs/trees, and installation of sod.
As a reminder to residents who had their property remediated in 2010, the one year
maintenance requirement is soon approaching. If you have had any problems associated
with the work that EPA completed in 2010 on your property, you are asked to contact
Arlene Anderson, On-Scene Coordinator. In addition, those residents who received
reimbursement, EPA is only responsible for sod-service.
The On-Scene Coordinator and support team will be back in Depew to inspect the
neighborhoods that were remediated during the later April to mid-May timeframe 2011.
On-Scene Coordinator, Arlene Anderson can be reached at EPA's Edison Field Facility,
New Jersey at (732) 906-6803. Community Involvement Coordinator, Mike Basile, can be
reached at EPA's Western New York Public Information Office, Buffalo, NY at (716)
551-4410.
Overview of the Site
The Site is located in an industrial and residential area in Depew, New York. In early
1998, NYSDEC approached Norampac, Inc. ("Norampac"), a member of Cascades Group,
regarding the elevated PAHs and metals detected at the former NL property in 1987 and
requested that Norampac conduct a subsurface investigation on their property.
Normapac & NL Industries, Inc. ("NL") extended the investigation to residential
properties to the north of Walden Avenue and west of Transit Road. Lead contaminated residential properties were
identified and were later distinguished as the Phase 1 Residential Properties or Phase 1 area.
A total of 36 properties on Transit Road, Walden and Harvard Avenues, as well as Bostwick Place, W. Third and W. Second
Streets were found to have lead-contaminated soil that required remediation. These residential properties were remediated
by NL in 2005 under an Administrative Order on Consent ("AOC") executed by EPA on September 29, 2004.
