In October 1988, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (Era), in
conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), began
a Remedial Investigation of the Hunts Disposal Landfill Superfund site,
Caledonia, Wisconsin.
The field work for the investigation has been completed, and U.S. EPA expects
to soon finish its analysis of the data that was generated. This fact sheet
describes the activities that have been conducted to date.
From November 1988 to May 1989, a variety of activities were performed in
connection with the investigation at the Hunts Disposal Landfill site. These
activities included sampling, laboratory analysis and well installations.
Some of the specifics are listed below:
• Installation of 19 wells designed to evaluate the quality of the
ground water in the vicinity of the landfill;
• Installation of three wells into the waste material comprising the
landfill; and
• Surveying the site for the presence of radioactivity.
In addition, various materials comprising the environment were sampled.
These included residential (drinking water) wells; ground water in the
general vicinity of the landfill; water from the Root River and the on-site
lake, surface and subsurface soil; sediment from the bottom of the lake,
river and other ponds; and air from within the gaseous environment of the
landfill.
A second set of sampling was performed to confirm the results obtained in the
first set and also to determine if seasonal effects are present. This means
that results may differ during rainy and dry periods or during warmer and
colder weather. This is especially true when testing ground water levels in
monitoring wells.

While the evaluation of the data obtained from the investigation is still
being evaluated, the following is a preliminary sumnary of what has been
learned to date:
• As expected, a number of synthetic organic chemical contaminants have
been identified in the landfill. These include vinyl chloride, ethyl
benzene.
• There is no evidence of contamination of local residential water
supplies from materials present at the site. Letters were sent last
February to residents whose wells were tested to inform them of these
findings.
In addition, U.S. EPA and the Racine County Parks Department were
unsuccessful in preventing trespassers from entering the site. All signs,
fences and-other structures were destroyed. These actions only prolong EPA's
investigation as well as cost the taxpayers money. Vandalism to Superfund
sites is a federal offense. Area residents who notice trespassers on the
Hunts property should file a report with local authorities.
UPCOMING
U.S. EPA is in the process of reviewing the analytical data generated as a
result of the investigation. A risk assessment is also being conducted which
will examine the impact of identified contaminants to human health and the
environment. Results of the investigation and risk assessment are scheduled
to be published in a Remedial Investigation report which U.S. EPA expects to
release for public review in early 1990. A public meeting will be held at
that time to explain the results of the investigation and answer questions
from the audience.
The results of the investigation will be used as the basis of a Feasibility
Study which will identify and evaluate technologies and methods for
addressing contamination found on the site. Upon completion of the
feasibility study in Spring 1990, U.S. EPA will hold another meeting to
discuss the available clean-up measures and to accept public comments on
those measures. The meeting will be held during a 30-day comment period so
members of the community may enter a verbal conment for public record or send
written comments to U.S. EPA.

Earlier this year, U.S. EPA appointed Michael Yang as Remedial Project
Manager for the Hunts Disposal Landfill site. Yang, a Chicago resident, has
five years of EPA experience including one year as an On-Scene Coordinator in
the Superfund Emergency Response Section. He is currently responsible for
five Superfund sites in Wisconsin and Michigan. He holds a bachelor's degree
in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a
master's degree in chemical engineering from Illinois Institute of
Technology, Chicago.

to reviev the documents that have been prepared for the site. Copies of the
applicable laws, the work plan for the Remedial Investigation and the
