1. Introduction
This document presents the Data Exchange Template for the United States Environmental
Protection Agency's (U.S. EPA) Integrated Compliance Information System - National Pollutant
Discharge Elimination System (ICIS-NPDES) flow of Electronic Discharge Monitoring Report
(DMR) data through the Exchange Network in XML format.
2. Data Exchange Template
The ICIS-NPDES template is given in Section 3. The columns in it are:

IDEF Tag Name
Elements to be provided to ICIS in XML instance documents are listed in the Data Exchange
Template in alphabetical order. Element names follow the Exchange Network's camel case
naming standards, and any element that matches EPA's XML data standards and guidelines that
were in place as of January 1, 2004 is named according to the matching standard.
In the Data Exchange Template, each element has an example of usage within the instance
document, tells whether it is required, has a description of the data to be contained within the
element, the XML datatype (string, date, integer), the maximum and minimum lengths of the
contained data, special handling or reference table association for business rules, the name of the
schema globalizing the element, the name of the XML instance document(s) providing the
element, the module or parent of the element, whether the element meets an EPA data standard,
the corresponding PCS field acronym, and the corresponding IDEF tag name.
Some elements appear in more than one XML instance document or within the same XML
instance document with different parent tags. These elements have more than one entry under
the XML Instance Document column and/or more than one entry under the Module column.
