  Site Name: Chemfax, Inc. Superfund site
  Size:  11 acres
  Supported Site Uses: Unrestricted land use (following cleanup)
  Existing Site Infrastructure:  All major utilities are available.
  Readiness for Use:  Site will be ready for unrestricted use following cleanup
  of contaminated soils in summer 2012. Ground water use is restricted.

  SETTING:
  •   The site, zoned for commercial and light industrial
     uses, is located next to a major commercial area.
     Gulfport-Biloxi International  Airport,  downtown
     Gulfport, and the Port of Gulfport are located
     several miles south of the site.
  •   The site property is vacant and owned by the State
     of Mississippi. The State will seek to lease out the
     property following cleanup in 2012.
  •   The site is situated on Sixteenth Section land. Title
     to Sixteenth Section  land is  vested in the State of
     Mississippi,  in trust for support of public education.
  •   The  site  includes open space and brush,  two
     abandoned structures and building footings.
  •   Site surroundings include Bernard Bayou (north),
     vacant land and industrial uses (east), and commercial
     areas (south and west).
  •   Nearby highways: U.S. Interstate 10 and U.S.  Route
     49.
  •   Gulfport's population (2010): 67,793.

 REMEDIAL STATUS:
    Resin   and  wax   manufacturing  operations
    contaminated site soils and ground  water with
    BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes)
    and PAHs (polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons).
    Contamination does not pose a risk to human
    health; the site is fenced and nearby properties are
    connected to the public water system.
    The  site's remedy will include excavation and off-
    site disposal of contaminated soils. Ground water is
    being addressed by monitored natural attenuation.
    EPA is working closely with the State of Mississippi
    to facilitate the site's cleanup. The State is funding
    remaining cleanup activities.
