Applying for Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR® Certification The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes architects for energy- efficient commercial building designs that achieve the ENERGY STAR. These projects and A/E firms are showcased in the ENERGY STAR Challenge: Architects. Figure 1. The Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR certification graphic can be displayed on project drawings and promotional materials. DESIGNED TO EARN THE ENERGY STAR The estimated energy performance for this design meets US EPA criteria. The building will be eligible for ENERGY STAR after maintaining superior performance for one year. Figure 2. Statement of Energy Design Intent from Target Finder documents estimated energy use and CO savings. (Figure 1) The Architect of Record (AOR) ensures that the project meets EPA requirements and submits application documents to receive the certification. Receiving an EPA Energy Performance Score Does the estimated energy use of your projects meet EPA criteria to earn ENERGY STAR? Use Target Finder Online: Enter basic building design characteristics and total estimated annual energy to receive the EPA energy score. Completing the Application Process The Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR certification process is easy and cost effective for small and large A/E firms. The AOR submits to EPA letters of intent for its firm and from the building owner. The letters along with the Statement of Energy Design Intent from Target Finder (Figure 2) document the energy use target and commitment to meet EPA criteria to achieve the ENERGY STAR. Becoming an ENERGY STAR Partner Architecture firms can join the Service and Product Provider partnership by submitting a design project that achieves ENERGY STAR. These partners work with building owners and provide energy use analyses, tools, and strategies to help set and achieve energy efficiency goals. Recognizing the Best EPA awards Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR only to those projects and A/E firms whose building designs meet the guidelines set by EPA. The ENERGY STAR is recognized by more than 75% of the American public as the symbol for superior energy efficiency. Your firm can display ENERGY STAR on project drawings and promotional materials to show clients your commitment to save energy, save money, and reduce the carbon footprint of the built environment.
