Calico Energy is the first service and product provider to help a utility company automate the collection
and submission of commercial building usage data to the EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.
Project Scope
Calico Energy partnered with Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), a Chicago-based utility serving approximately
3.8 million customers in northern Illinois, including more than 350,000 businesses, to implement a software
solution that reduces the complexity and administrative burden of collecting, validating, and submitting whole
building, multi-tenant energy usage data to the EPA's online ENERGY STAR tool, Portfolio Manager.
Project Summary
Calico's Green Certification™ software is the first third-party energy management tool designed specifically for a
utility company to facilitate the submission of building-wide energy usage data to EPA's Portfolio Manager tool.
It eliminates the administrative burden of gathering usage data manually, and has greatly simplified ENERGY
STAR coordination for ComEd's building managers, making it possible for them to quickly configure and
automate data submission to Portfolio Manager. With this solution, ComEd has reduced the time required to set
up each building from 10-12 days to just 24 hours.
• Number of Facilities and Total Square Footage
ComEd has processed more than 2,900 requests for a cumulative total of more than 8,800 months of
energy usage data using Green Certification. The 2,350 buildings whose energy usage is being
monitored with the product cover more than 475 million square feet.
• Energy Savings
Green Certification helps building managers within ComEd's service territory take full advantage of
Portfolio Manager to examine and compare their building's energy usage history. It also enables
building managers to develop and monitor energy saving strategies and quantify the impact of energy
efficiency projects and operational changes.
• Participants
Green Certification is helping hospitals, hotels, medical office buildings, waste water treatment plants,
courthouses, financial centers, warehouses, schools and others in the Chicago area to easily track their
energy use.

Since Green Certification is maintained by Calico Energy, any technical updates to Portfolio Manager
are transparent to the utility and its customers, thus ensuring accurate and successful monthly data
updates. Green Certification leverages enterprise-class data security systems and data aggregation so
customers can have complete confidence in the calculation, storage, and privacy of their data.
Distinguishing Value
With the onset of numerous regulations and incentives requiring submission of energy usage data, ComEd's
deployment is a success story for other utilities interested in helping customers leverage the ENERGY STAR
program to its fullest potential. For its efforts, the Association of Energy Services Professionals (AESP) awarded
ComEd its Outstanding Achievement in Energy Program Design or Implementation award in February 2010.
ComEd also received the 2009 ENERGY STAR Special Recognition Award for Innovation in Customer Service.
