Project Scope Emerging Technologies Associates, Inc. (ETA) worked with Sharp Healthcare System to implement energy- reduction initiatives at four acute care clinics, three specialty hospitals, and medical clinics located throughout San Diego County, CA. Sharp began tracking energy at each facility using EPA's Portfolio Manager, and adopted the seven-step Guidelines for Energy Management. By benchmarking energy use and following a strategic energy management approach, ETA helped all facilities reduce energy use. One facility, the Sharp Grossmont Hospital, stands out for exceptional energy reductions and a dedicated energy management team. Project Summary In August 2009, ETA worked with Sharp Grossmont's engineering and facilities management teams to create an energy management plan, beginning with benchmarking energy use in order to establish a baseline, setting energy reduction goals, and tracking improvements. Tools such as the Facility Energy Assessment Matrix were used to help evaluate effectiveness of Sharp Grossmont's energy management program, and recommend measures to further strengthen initiatives. ETA helped Sharp Grossmont communicate to employees about their energy program and ENERGY STAR partnership through newsletters and launch of an employee education campaign on no- and low-cost energy saving measures. • Energy Savings Sharp Grossmont reduced its energy consumption by 9% between July 2008 and July 2010, which translates to a reduction of 106.7 kBtu/square foot. • Investment Sharp Grossmont invested over $2 million in energy-related projects such as three centrifugal chiller replacements, installation of Hartman LOOP chiller system optimization technology, HVAC control system upgrades, lighting retrofits, water efficient landscaping, and water pipe insulation repairs. • Financial Return The average simple payback for energy-related projects implemented was 1.5 years. • Other Benefits Projects have improved the temperature control system, minimized moisture intrusion, and increased patient and staff comfort. Sharp Grossmont is now running pumps and other rotating machinery more efficiently, resulting in longer times between maintenance cycles and less wear and tear on equipment. Monitoring & Verifying Energy Savings ETA works with Sharp Grossmont's energy team to review the ENERGY STAR score and energy use intensity of Sharp Grossmont each month, tracking improvements as the hospital implements new measures. Distinguishing Value ETA helped Sharp Grossmont to leverage ENERGY STAR resources, specifically Portfolio Manager, the Guidelines for Energy Management, and the library of communications materials. These resources helped Sharp Grossmont and Sharp Healthcare System to be successful in reducing energy, and can be used by other hospitals to reduce energy use and offset a building's environmental impact.
