Summary By mid-year 2010, commercial and industrial organizations have almost exceeded activity levels reached throughout all of 2009. From January through June 30, 2010: • More than 80,000 buildings have benchmarked their energy usage with ENERGY STAR, of which 63,000 buildings received an ENERGY STAR energy performance score—nearly equivalent to the amount for all of 2009. • Close to 3,200 buildings earned the ENERGY STAR label—the highest amount earned through two quarters of any year, and 80% higher than mid-year 2009. The ENERGY STAR Snapshot provides an at-a-glance summary of the latest national ENERGY STAR metrics to help you, our partners, see the impact of your efforts. The ENERGY STAR Snapshot is distributed twice a year and provides: • Trends in energy benchmarking of commercial and industrial buildings. • State-by-state activity along with activity for the top Designated Market Areas. • Industrial sector participation in ENERGY STAR. • Trends in ENERGY STAR labeled commercial and industrial facilities. Trends in Measuring Building Energy Performance => Energy Use Benchmarking Becoming Established Business Practice Benchmarking energy use is a first step to assess energy performance and to measure ongoing progress. EPA's online tool, Portfolio Manager (PM), enables building owners and managers to assess and track this performance overtime as well as target investments in energy efficiency. • Nearly 130,000 buildings have received an ENERGY STAR energy performance score, accounting for over 16 billion square feet. • More than 32,000 additional buildings that cannot receive an energy performance score have benchmarked using other metrics available in PM. These buildings include fire and police stations, multifamily housing, and colleges/universities. Earning the ENERGY STAR Label => Recognition for Top Energy Performers Buildings earn the ENERGY STAR by achieving a score of 75 or higher on EPA's energy performance scale and meeting relevant requirements for indoor air quality. These buildings typically use about 35 percent less energy than average buildings. • Through June 2010, 10,705 buildings earned the ENERGY STAR, representing more than 1.8 billion square feet. • In the first 6 months of 2010, 3,185 buildings earned the ENERGY STAR—surpassing any other 6 month period and representing 80% of all ENERGY STAR labels earned in 2009. • In June 2010, the first data center earned the ENERGY STAR. Sixty-four plants have received the ENERGY STAR designation: Twenty-four cement plants, 15 auto assembly, 8 petroleum refining, 7 pharmaceutical manufacturing, 7 wet corn milling plants, and 3 frozen fried potato plants. EPA Recognition for Organization-Wide Improvements EPA recognizes organizations as ENERGY STAR Leaders when they achieve significant energy efficiency milestones. ENERGY STAR Leaders must meet one of two energy efficiency improvement milestones. The first type requires a 10 percent energy reduction across the organization's entire building portfolio, with recognition also given at each additional 10 percent increment. The second type, known as "top performer", requires the buildings in an organization's portfolio, on average, to perform in the top 25 percent of similar buildings nationwide, as demonstrated by an average ENERGY STAR score of 75 or higher. Since 2004, 128 organizations have achieved ENERGY STAR Leader recognition. Cumulative & Annual Number of ENERGY STAR Leaders (through June 30, 2010) to re •a a> N 'E O) o o a> Of (0 to a> (0 0. Spotlight on Key ENERGY STAR Partners ENERGY STAR has over 3,200 Commercial and Industrial partners, which, combined, have committed more than 17 billion square feet to energy efficiency. In this fall's Snapshot, EPA is turning the spotlight on two key ENERGY STAR partners: NetApp and Fireman's Fund. Spotlight: NetApp Building Becomes First ENERGY STAR Labeled Data Center When data centers became eligible to receive an ENERGY STAR performance score and ENERGY STAR label from EPA in June 2010, during that first month more than 80 data centers benchmarked their energy performance and one earned the ENERGY STAR label: NetApp's Research Triangle Park (RTP) facility. NetApp is a technology firm that provides storage and data management solutions to businesses. The NetApp data center in RTP met the criteria to earn the first ENERGY STAR label for a data center with an impressive energy performance score of 99. The RTP data center is used for research on storage efficiency and cloud computing. Some of the RTP data center's energy efficiency practices include using higher supply air temperatures, using outside air for cooling during the majority of the year, and employing innovative overhead air distribution strategies to reduce the need for fans. NetApp's RTP facility serves as a model of energy efficiency for the data center market. As of August 31, 2010, three additional data centers had earned the ENERGY STAR. Data center partners in the ENERGY STAR program demonstrate how energy efficient practices can cut costs and help protect the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For more information on the data center performance score please visit http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=prod development.server efficiencv#rating Spotlight: Fireman's Fund Insurance Company Offers Discounts for Labeled Buildings Fireman's Fund is an insurance company that provides insurance solutions for businesses and organizations. In the summer of 2010, Fireman's Fund announced that policyholders with ENERGY STAR buildings were eligible for a five percent discount. Fireman's Fund risk services consultants are also offering their policyholders assistance with benchmarking their buildings' energy and water consumption with Portfolio Manager, identifying under- performing buildings, developing energy management goals, setting investment priorities, and tracking performance and savings overtime. Fireman's Fund's program is innovative in its recognition of the greater value and lower risks of energy- efficient buildings. The discounts provide a tangible financial benefit to owners and operators of top- performing buildings - in addition to the reduced energy costs they already experience. Fireman's Fund was also the first property and casualty insurance company to offer "green insurance" to the U.S. commercial marketplace.
